What is SEO? for Fresh Graduate

As a fresh graduate entering the in-house or digital marketing agency, you'll likely hear the term "SEO" thrown around a lot. But what exactly does it mean?

What does SEO mean?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization.

It's all about making your website more visible and higher-ranking on search engines like Google when people look for topics related to your business, products, or services.

Think about the last time you searched for something on Google.

You probably clicked on one of the top few results, right?

That's because those websites have done a good job at optimizing for search engines, allowing them to rank higher and get more visibility.

The higher your website ranks, the more likely people are to find and visit it when they search for relevant keywords.

And more visitors mean more potential customers or clients for your business.

So how does SEO work?

Search engines like Google use complex algorithms to determine the most relevant and valuable websites to show for each search query.

These algorithms consider hundreds of factors, like the quality and relevance of your website's content, how user-friendly and fast your site is, and how many other credible websites link back to your pages.

The goal of SEO is to optimize your website to satisfy these ranking factors as best as possible, essentially proving to search engines that your site deserves to rank higher than your competitors for particular keywords or topics. This involves things like:

  • Doing keyword research to understand what terms your target audience is searching for
  • Creating high-quality, informative content that answers those search queries thoroughly
  • Making sure your website is fast, mobile-friendly, and easy to navigate
  • Building backlinks from other reputable sites (which signals authority to search engines)
  • Using proper HTML tags, meta descriptions, image optimization, and other technical SEO best practices

While SEO can seem complex, it's all about creating the best possible experience for your website visitors. Google wants to recommend sites that truly deliver what searchers are looking for.

As a fresh grad, learning SEO fundamentals can be hugely valuable, regardless of your specific career path. It'll give you a competitive edge and help you better understand how to get your work found online in our increasingly digital world.
